I have been trying to find work to do online and I have gotten responses from several businesses. My problem is that I don't know if they are legit or not. All of them ask for some type of investment in order to work for them which makes me unsure. Is there a site that I can do a background check before I make any type of decision?

There are dozens of online business rating services that claim to do this. The problem is, who rates the raters?

Some of them will even let the businesses themselves. Others limit their ratings to whether a company has specific items listed (such as: physical address, phone number, email address, return policy, guarantee) irregardless of whether they will abide by their claims. Still others will let you pay a fee for the ratings they provide.

Sometimes the best thing to do is find a street address and then contact their local Chamber of Commerce or Better Business Bureau. See if these companies exist in anything besides an Internet format.

A company that wants your money to go to work for them is a step behind in creating credibility in my opinion. IF what they are providing is the right to be a distributor then payment may be reasonable, but not for general employment.

Try looking away from companies that want your money and look for those who are willing to have you promote their products. Unless you have a web site that gets thousands of unique visitors a week most standard affiliate programs will not be very satisfying to you.

A better approach would be with a company that provides a unique product or service and concentrate on maximizing your income from them.

Yes, they are harder to find but it's not impossible.

if you mean a legal operating entity, by "legitimate" ...

if you are able to find out the state in which they operate / do business, they must be registered and licensed to operate in that state.

you can verify their business licenses by going to each state's government web site and peforming a search on the company name.
