yesterday it was lush and green, today it looks likes the leaves have shrivelled up

Normally, it's a lack of water or slug attack. Better get those pieces of grit around your marigolds. They do like the sun too, so are they in the shade? Organic gardening, that's good for the planet. Birds can accidently eat slug pellets. Not good!

I really don't know but I would like to find out. Some of my marigolds have turned pasty and died too. I thought maybe it was the heat. It has been over 100 everyday for the last month but I water them everyday. Some of them look great. Maybe there is an insect that attacks them but I don't see anything.

More than likely the cabbage moth is to blame. The caterpillar of this moth particuarly attacks the roots of this plant also it likes pelargoniums and china aster, having the same devastating effect.
