You definitely have the spirit and soul of a true artist! I congratulate you! For one thing before going to a makeup school do makeup on anyone who is willing to be your model, this will help you develop your technique and style. I use to do makeup on all the characters in coloring books when I was a kid, then it was to friends and family. We had so much fun! I f you have the chance and age , offer your services assisting a makeup artist free of charge.
Do a search on makeup schools. There are many good ones out there. I don't think they have scholarships but some such as Joe Blasco Makeup School (http://joeblasco.com/blascoschools/index.htm )offer student loans. I wish you the best of luck!

If you really have talent, I mean real talent, you don't have to go to school. A great way to start a career in makeup & gain experience is working for a studio such as Glamour Shots. Once you are ready to freelance, you need to build a portfolio. A portfolio is a sort of resume for artists: instead of text you have professional photographs that showcase your talent. The portfolio consists of your best work. In order to get professional photos for your portfolio you'll have to do a LOT of TFP work. TFP, or Time-for-Print, exchanges your makeup services for professional photos from photographers & models. Once your portfolio is complete, you can submit samples to photo studios, magazines, talent management companies, etc. Another option, you can intern for or shadow an established makeup artist that can teach you the tricks of the business. It is a very competitive line of work & networking is key. Your work will not come from advertising on a billboard but from word-of-mouth referrals. And remember, even though it can be very lucrative (some jobs can pay over $2000 for a day's work) it is also expensive ; you have to constantly invest in new tools, products, & time to become a success. I am a fairly successful MUA with no formal training but LOTS of experience. Much Success to You!

You will need to attend cosmetology school in order to become a make-up artist. Not only will be get training, but guidance in how and where to get a job. Some work in spas and beauty shops, some in department stores, some work in the theater or movies. Once you learn the trade you will be able to apply for the jobs.

Good luck!

Start by selling makeup at a department store for one of the companies, such as MAC. You have to go through training and the company will pay you for the training. Once you get some experience, you can move up. I know someone who started selling Origins products and now she is a high salaried manager for Bare Escentuals. I am sure you will be great at it because you already have some passion for this profession. Good uck!

You are very lucky Patty to have been wise enough to get excited about a career that is not terribly difficult and expensive to get good at.

While this is true, there are infinite levels of creativity and skill to cosmetology, and the highest level workers get paid very well.

It can indeed be fun, and I have had friends that loved the job!

Where to start? Probably reading up on it would be helpful like in the links below.

Have fun reading up and enjoy!

Find a school that offers a program or specializes in cosmetology. It's a very competitive industry but if you work hard and you meet the right people, you can be successful.
