I have heard alot of talk from Democrats about how they will win back the Senate, then impeach the President. So it made me start wondering how much average people really understand about the impeachment process.
What may a president be impeached for?
What are the steps required to impeach a president?
What presidents have been impeached?

The constitution states that the President and other officers can be impeached for "Treason, Bribery, or other high Crimes and Misdemeanors," but this phrase has not ever been well defined. It is essentially left up to Congress to decide what it means. Theoretically any decision made by them could be appealed to the Supreme Court though.
The process is: Someone must introduce an article impeaching the president in the House of Representatives and this must pass by a simple majority of those voting. At this point, the President has been impeached (though not convicted). The Senate then convenes to hear the case over which the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court presides, with the prosecution presented by members of the House. If 2/3 of the Senate members vote to convict, the president is removed from office.
Andrew Johnson and Bill Clinton have been impeached, but no president has ever been convicted. Several judges have been removed from office, however.

The first thing to realize is that this talk of impeachment IS no more than venting on the current administration.
If you look at the history if impeachement, 90% of the time it is used as just another kind of mud-slinging.
The president basically has to be accused of a fairly serious crime (like in Watergate where Nixon resigned first) for it it stick. Even lying under oath wasn't enough to get Clinton impeached.
Bush obviously hasn't done anything big, at least not that we know of, so all of this is smoke and mirrors. They might "call" for impeachment, but it would never be more than an insult unless there was some serious and specific crime that he committed: I can't see that happening.

There are different laws in different countries but the general answers would have to be:
1. high treason, plunder to name a few, but one very interesting impeachable act is betrayal of public trust, with that, any high official may be impeached.
2. 2/3 vote of higher or lower court.
3. Pres. Joseph Estrada, Philippines for example was tried for impeachment (plunder), but because of People Power II, he was ousted, not impeached.

Well there are a few things he can be tried for.
the one i want really investigated is election fraud...but only until we have a real commission on can the american vote mean something.
There are issues of guilt
pending on
voilation of the constition
by conducting domestic warentless spying.
pending on
authorization of torture in
voliation of Geneva
pending on
exection of an illegal war
in voliation of congressinal agreement to abide by the UN.
the process is simple the house investigates to see if there has been a crime commited
once the house votes to see if they should go ahead.......the president is impeached and then it goes to the Senate for a hearing.
The Senate then votes.......

impeach means to accuse. it does not mean you lose your job, it means you are accused.
andrew johnson and bill clinton are the only two presidents to ever be impeached.
and for trivia's sake, hillary clinton is the only first lady to testify before a grand jury.

If they try to impeach him, there is no way (if they win in 06) that they will win in 08.
