. My last trip was Rome. How does one avoid this because it really fouls up my itenerary?

The best thing to do is before you time travel, you should plan what you are going to do before you proceed.

Have a check-out list on your computer , listing things you require under headings like :
Toileteries - tooth brush, paste , ........
Clothes - a) for a couple of days - ..................
b) for a week - ...................
Medicines if any .................................
Official Papers ..................................
cash /credit /tickets /laptop /telephone nos/.....
Gifts...................
Misceleanous ...................................
Travel schedule .................................
Plus any other headings according to your requirement.
Print out the standard list and tick them as you pack .
