Because they work for God, and God desires that all men be saved, even the stupid ones!
Mat 7:12 All things therefore whatsoever you would that men should do to you, do you also to them. For this is the law and the prophets.
Mat 7:13 Enter ye in at the narrow gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way that leadeth to destruction, and many there are who go in thereat.
Mat 7:14 How narrow is the gate, and strait is the way that leadeth to life: and few there are that find it!

Firstly lets look at what happens in most churches. You get two(2) sets of rules, Those found in the Bible and those that are considered church doctrine. Most churches use their doctrine to mould the churchgoers to their way of seeing and interpreting the Bible. So they "twist" the bible to suit them. So the answer to ur question is, they have all the restrictions to control the members easier!!!

it depends on what you compare it to. when you look, for example, at oriental and middle-eastern religions, it doesn't seem so restrictive.

control.
they want to preserve a "holier than thou" image which they think gives them authority, and in the eyes of their followers, it does.
most others just see it as being incredibly silly, i mean honestly, i have parents to tell me what to do.
