That should be a $1000 car at most.
It is ten years old, high milage, and the Ford Taurus was not built to last.

Just a throw-away car, but if it runs decent....i.e. the transmission does not shutter, etc. If it is not an oil burner, an unmistakeable smell.....Take it for a test-drive, and when you get out, if you smell something.....Like something burning, run away from that piece of crap as fast as you can.

It may be a decent stop-gap, until you can afford something better. You cannot expect much for the amount of money you have to spend.

Use your best judgement, you don't have to be an expert to know a turd when you see one. Good luck!

The real cost of the car is the $1700 + the cost to repair the car. I would get a estimate to repair the car from a panel beater before making an offer on the car. Check that value against the going price for that car and make an informed decision.

Pay no more than blue book, less the cost of repairs. Probably going to be in the region of $1,000.00 tops.

Always run a CarFax check on any used car. It costs a few $$$ but will reveal much about the car. I'd run one even on a cheapo sled like that. It would also be a good idea to have a mechanic check it out.

I own a 1997 ford taurus and live in minnesota...here my bank and auto dealers tell me the car is only blue book price; worth 800.00 and that is without any damage to my car, not even rust! I would say the one you are buying has high mileage and it is not worth more than blue book value. look for any damage to the engine tires rims front end alignment definitely test drive it before buying it and try making an offer to see if they will sell it at blue book value which is $800.00 in good condition too.
