I don't know much about mayflies. But I've been watching ants - their single-minded purpose in finding food, building materials and whatever else to help their community inspires me. You never see an ant jealously guarding the food it has found. Its first instinct is to haul that food back to its fellow community members so that they can all partake. You also see 'undertaker ants' hauling dead ants out of the colony to a final resting place.
Ants do not believe in God. They do not do these things in the hope of some kind of 'reward' in an ant afterlife. They just do them. And as a result, ants thrive and proliferate.
We, on the other hand, got trapped up somewhere as our brains started swelling in the concept of a god who made us superior to other animals. We got this idea of the 'self' and we started going out of our way to find 'purpose' in life for this 'self' - at the expense of other people and at the expense of the Earth itself.
Many of us have thrown ourselves on what's been called a 'hedonistic treadmill' - in the pursuit of better and bigger and newer and more. It fulfils nothing. Many others have defined their purpose in life by the teachings of a book that may or may not have any basis in reality. They are chasing a dream - heaven - that may or may not exist.
In the end, I think the ants are right. But I don't pretend to be any wiser than the next man.

There is a lot in a man's life to fulfill him many times over. The wise man does not concern himself with speculation but what he can learn and what he can teach.

Thinking about the truth can be enlightening indeed. It reveals that the only purpose to life is that which we give it ourselves - there is nothing beyond our own life other than that which is conjured up by the imagination. Anthropocentric based assumptions only highlight the ignorance and immaturity of the assumer.

The saying refers to limiting yourself to what is useful. Your implied connection to an Atheist not having a fulfilling life is false. Because, I can enjoy myself just as much as you can without becoming a gluton.
