In a classroom situation can girls and boys of 18 and above sit together to study and attend instructions from the whiteboard. Would it be healthy in their learning process.

Sohaila, this is an interesting question, but there is no easy answer! I know in my culture, it is very common for boys and girls to mix in this way, but in other cultures, boys and girls are not used to studying like this, and may find it more distracting or uncomfortable. Ignore the silly comment from the person above - different cultures are a wonderful thing and it is just ignorance (and poor world education) that makes people say blinkered things like that!

Anyway in the west, there are a lot of statistics that are showing that girls do better academically when they are educated only with other girls, whereas boys do better when they are in mixed classes. This takes into account general patterns that suggest boys and girls have different learning styles and mature at different stages. There is an excellent paper from the Brookings Institute, a famous think-tank, at this URL (although it is quite weighty and intellectual, you may be interested).

Incidentally, many academic schools in the developed world still have segregated teaching up until age 18, but less so at university level.

In most of the world it is common practice and works just fine. From your question it seems that you are in a more conservative country. If the sexes have been kept separate for religious reasons, it may be distracting for them to sit together. In particularly conservative Muslim areas, girls may not attend class if they must sit with boys. If they do sit with the boys, they and their families may suffer severe consequences. It seems silly to us westerners but a girl's decision to sit with the boys in college may affect her sister's marriage prospects. It is more important that the girls go to school than where they sit. I hope you are in an area where the girls will be able to sit together with the boys.

Yes, they can, but I believe they can concentrate better when they are separated. My 9 year old daughter is interested in her clothing for school, etc. more than her studies. What will it be like in 5 years! I am seriously thinking of putting her in an all-girls high school. It seems to me a good thing. There's plenty of time later for her to meet men!

I don't know which country u belongs to but here in India we have co education system where boys and girls are in a same class to learn. Not only in lower class but even in graduation and post graduation classes to.
It hardly matters but creat a healthy competetive atmosphere between two genders.

You don't have to be 18 to sit with someone of the opposite sex in school.
