I took my first solo cruise at 57 to the Caribbean. I celebrated my 58th birthday on the ship. Just be alert! On shore excursions, go with the ones offered by the cruise line--chances are someone else from the ship will be going also. If you want to explore on your own, stay on the main streets. Use traveler's checks. ALWAYS remember that there is safety in numbers. I turned 59 on a Hawaii tour (did it solo) and 60 on a guided Mexico tour--also solo. If you feel at all threatened while ashore, go in a store. On the ship--alert a crew member. In the airport--either in a store or a gate employee. Skycaps are your friends, and will always help for a tip! Traveling alone is a wonderful adventure, and you have a great opportunity to meet people, just don't be stupid. Best conversation starter? Offer to take a photo for someone with their camera, or ask if they will take a photo of you. Enjoy yourself! I would travel alone in a heartbeat!

I would not really advise any woman to travel to a foreign country alone unless you plan to be chapperoned around. I know of two people who went on their own and never came back but sadly in a wooden box. Please be careful if you have no other choice. Do not walk with a lot of money when you go out. Ask you hotel for reputable cab firms. Do not flash your money when purchasing items. The locals tend to know who is tourist an who is is not and who is vulnerable. The word can be passed on to the wrong ears and so on. I am not trying to scare you but just to ask you to extra careful if you are to travel alone and it would be nice for you to come back to answers and tell us about your vacation. Bon voyage and God Bless
