Fasterfox increases the speed by cleverly compressing the data sent to your machine before uncompressing it at the other end.
Plugin is the same as add-on it pretty much means it is a tool which attaches to the main application to work with it.
Tweaking means trial and error with the settings. Fiddling with the settings and looking at the page timer will give you an idea of what makes your particular internet speed faster.
