I can only guess it is because you can 'see' how appetising the drink is, but for example, it seems to make little or no difference with certain fruit juices and hot drinks like tea or coffee.

Glass is a naturally clean, slippery surface which best preserves the flavor of the liquid inside. Other drink containers require special coatings to prevent corrosion from the acid that is present in most soft drinks. My guess is that the taste variation comes from the chemicals that are needed for these coatings.
