In reality the republicans do not give a rats a** about the sanctity
of marriage. The gay marriage thing is simply pandering to the bible toting right where they find some support. Every midterm election time they need to come up with a minority group of people who can be hated by one bigot group or another. This time its the immigrants. Its easy to set up a minority group who cannot defend itself without abuse or deportation. I think you'll find that there is no consensus in the GOP to make it tougher to get divorced. Most of them are on the second or third wife already. A congressman accused of spousal abuse is rarely a democrat. We are being governed (?) by the most hypocritical,
dishonest deceitful group in our nation's history.

Marriage is a matter of the heart that the government collects on. And, as far as Sanctity of Marriage, well, for someone who preaches it, the Bushman doesn't do a damn thing make changes that would encourage marriage--If you remain single and you are a parent, you get a very hefty tax refund each year. (over $3000.00 for filing single, head of household). If you are single, you get money back too. BUT, if you are married filing jointly (and shouldn't all things be joint when you are married?) you OWE the government, unless the person making the most money files single--withholding more taxes from his/her income. Now, why would I want to get married? Well, I gave up my single head of household because I loved the man I wanted to spend the rest of my life with. As for getting married in an Elvis chapel, in Las Vegas, by an untraditional priest/ minister, or in a crummy Justice of the Peace (did that one the first time), married is married, and if that is what pleases both of you, then GO FOR IT; marriage is the bond--marriage is the commitment, and marriage is the state of complete and unconditional love that is between two people --ANY two people. What the republicans are trying to preserve is tradition, not sanctitiy, at the expense of real people who suffer--not because they cannot do the act of marriage itself, but because their partners are not protected legally. I don't know why--they get more money to go on their leisurely vacations. This whole thing is crappy politics--Live and let live --when it comes to love, take your government and shove it!

My husband and I disagree on gay marriage. I am for it, because why should they be punished just because they are gay. They should be able to have the same rights as a married couple. If they were to adopt a child, or in a lesbian relationship, if one was to have a child they would BOTH be considered the child's parents. The way the laws are now, if a lesbian couple breaks up the birth mother can take the child away from the other woman and she has no rights, it doesn't matter if she was the one that was staying home to raise the child. I don't think that is right. If a couple is together, and one of them dies, the other person's family can come in and take everything, if there was no will. If they were married they would not be able to do that.

Marriage today is not taken very seriously by most who go into it. It seems that most of the small places like the ones in Las Vegas are just in it for the money and nothing else.
Before a man and a woman get married they should go through whatever religious rituals that are needed. It seems that most of those marriages lasted far longer than today's marriages.

I think you pretty much answered your own question but I'll still provide my own 2 cents. I agree with you. I think you can define marriage as between a man and woman but that shouldn't stop you from still allowing gay couples. It's stupid that if a person is in a hospital and only family is allowed to visit, that their gay partner is not allowed to visit. It's small things like that, that make a difference. I don't care if you call it marriage or not but gay couples need the rights of straight couples. They did not choose their sexual orientation and should not be punished for it.
I also agree with your abortion comment. I am pro-choice. Overall I think abortion is a bad thing (anytime someone dies it is bad) but I respect the life of the adult over the fetus. Abortions should be allowed but I also think we should do more to prevent unwanted pregnancies that result in abortions.

Politicians are taking the hot topics at hand and discussing them and trying to put a solution to them for their future elections. If they were truly interested or cared about the issue they would do more than talk about it, they would attempt to fix it.

Don't be so ignorant. They have religious beliefs, be understanding. You can have your opinion but don't look like such a fool.
I think marriage should be protected from idiots.... not from gays.. just idiots.
Calm down and actually ask a question instead of using a soap box

Well...gay marriage isn't going to devalue the sanctity of marriage...it's actually only expanding marriage...I don't get what there is to "protect" marriage..
