Be a Yahoo! Messenger (similar to MSN Messenger) & invite them to be your online chat-mates through their email addresses. You should be able to see their pics & chat with them as well.

If they gave you an e-mail with @yahoo.com on the end, then use Yahoo! Instant Messenger. Since you probably met them here, they probably have Y!M. You have to download that program and install it on your computer, if you don't have it yet.
Once you get on, go up to the add buddy menu command and type the name part before the @yahoo.com part of the address. You should be able to see their name come up inside of your buddy list. They will probably have their photo on the list next to their name.
If they have MSN, you'll have to get their messenger. They might have AOL Instant Messenger, you'll have to get AIM, etc. What ever. I hope that this helps.
