American Pet registry will register ANY dog, and even mixes. It is a good indication that the dog is NOT purebred, or that its parents couldn't be registered.. Many pet quality dogs are sold with a limited registration, to keep people from breeding them..If those are bred, then their pups can't be registered, so they switch to a worthless registration club...
APRI registration means absolutely nothing..not even that the pup is purebred..It is a real scam, for use by disreputable breeders. Most puppy mill dogs are APR or Continental KC registered.

No. But their are many 'new' registries popping up strictly for profit with unscrupulous 'breeders' also only interested in money - many breed mutts & give them cutsey names(Puggle=beagle+pug, Labradoodle=Labrador+poodle, etc.) selling them to people that didn't do their homework enough to know the wool was being pulled over their eyes. P.T. Barnum would be proud (he said "There's a sucker born every minute"). It's fine if you want a mutt - but then do the right thing & get one from a shelter or rescue group and save a life already here. Don't perpetuate the cycle of these people breeding more mutts into the world! Every time someone gives them money for a pup, they are encouraged to breed again & again. The other reason bad breeders switch to these 'registries' is they have been banned from real, legitimite registries (like AKC & UKC) for unscrupulous breeding tactics such as: falsifying registration papers (i.e lying about the pups parentage), too many complaints from puppy buyers of getting unhealthy dogs from them, and having kennels reported by humane societies as being abusive & filthy. Would you trust what you were getting from such 'breeders'? The reason AKC & UKC are the only legitmate registries you should buy a dog from are: they are not JUST a registry. They promote dog shows, which after all, are proving grounds. Dogs compete against their breed's standard & are awarded titles to show they are what the breed is supposed to be. Why would we even bother to have different breeds if it was ok for them to all look & act the same? If I want a Boxer, I want it to look & act like a Boxer, not a Poodle! And other types of competition they have are to prove hunting ability (For Hounds & Sporting breeds), herding ability (Herding breeds) , and so on. Plus, they sponsor competitions to sharpen intelligence & trainablity (obedience) and for dogs & their owners to enjoy fitness & fun (agility & flyball). In other words, AKC & UKC have a point, they don't just issue some useless paper I could show to my friends to feel better about the fact I paid money for a mutt or (some poorly bred alleged) purebred. Always buy from a reputable breeder that belongs to the breed's club and is actively showing their dogs, and screens for health problems - go to www.akc.org for more information. Also, when in doubt, ask an expert - call some local veterinarians for their opinion. Happy hunting!

We just took a Weimaraner in to rescue who was a registered APR dog.
He was supposed to be a weimaraner. His color was right but his body was way to small and his head was more pit bull shaped. He was very small in the chest and his head was square. Short nose and short ear flaps. Just total wrong shape on the head.
Nice little guy and has been placed and doing well but I would not purchase a dog who was APR registered.
I look for certain things even in AKC registered dogs.
Keep in mind these are registry service s and they will register most anything. When you breed a litter of pups all they care about is that the parents were registered and then they ask how many pups you want to register. They do not ask if the pups are blind deaf or three legged just how many.
SO base you dog purchase on how well the pup fits the breed standard of that breed.

The APRI will only register dogs with AKC backgrounds. They will not register "any" dog or mixed breeds.
HOWEVER they did start up another registry for "hybrid" dogs..so that one DOES accept any darn mix.. and they charge an arm and a leg!

All those "Registration" clubs are stupid. The papers mean nothing when it comes to health or tempermant. All it means is that somebody mailed in a check.
Save yourself the effort and just get a healthy puppy and then provide proper care with vaccines, Dr visits and heartworm medicine.

Most breeders who switch to APR have been banned from AKC for fraudlent or abusive practices. It's a bright red neon sign that this is not a reputable breeder. RUN...
