Tibet was a country that was taken over by China. Ever see or hear of 'Free Tibet' demonstrators? Tibet to this day is under Chinese rule, although the customs and culture is different. The Dalai Lama is the spiritual leader of Tibet in-exile. I do not know if he goes around petitioning against China, although I think he may do that subtley. He preaches peace and tolerance, and travels to many locations around the globe, although I think he technically lives in India.

He is the religious leader of Tibetian Bhudhism. He won the Nobel prize in 92 if i'm not wrong, and ever sinceTibet was invaded by Mao's troops, he has became the only symbol of the nation.
He has been living in India since the invasion.
He's funny, friendly, and extremely wise. some countries have reluctance to welcome him officially due to the afront it represents to China, which claims Tibet has always been an integral part of the mainland.
