I actually looked it up. The children of your cousin are Second cousins to your children. The children of your cousin are your First cousins once removed.

P.S. Cousin is a really dumb word when you look at it typed out alot.

Actually they are third cousins. They are your second cousins. Your first cousins are your childrens' second cousins. So, if you think of it a while you will see that there are two ways to have second cousins. Your children according to some would say that your first cousins children are second cousins once removed. That is too confusing to me, but I see the concept, also, your cousins children and your children will always share one set of great-grandparents. That is unless cousins of other cousins, No Kin. marry and then your work it out as double cousins once removed. I do know a family who has an aunt who married a Smith and the niece also married a Smith, first cousin to the first Smith. Their children are second cousins on one side and third cousins on another side. Do the math to figure out which ones have which grandparents, etc. It is really not hard, and it is legal they always laugh and say. They are all Smiths' and aunt and niece married cousins. So, what is your question? ha ha

I've always called my Dad's cousins' children my third cousins. Since my Dad's cousins are my 2nd cousins...it only makes sense that his kids are once more removed...making them 3rd in line.

Your 1st cousin's children are your 1st cousins once removed, and they are the 2nd cousins of your children - not 3rd!
But of course just as important as 1st cousins!!

Just tell them they are family by long distance. But still family and to treat them as such. If you get in to all the numbers it sounds to kids like they are less important to one another. Cause kids think of numbers in things. Like my little sister is less important than me. It is a stage but still hard on their thought process.of how they relate to their "cousins"
