ive been in recovery from incest for the past 10 years. i am a female and i was molested by my father. im in therapy, taking meds for my depression and have done many a 12 step meeting.

im not able, however, to make 12 step meetings like i used to due to my work schedule. can anyone suggest any tools for continued work? i know about the courage to heal; ive never had the concentration to do their companion workbooks. i guess im just looking for some new resources - websites/books/groups. i feel like ive seen everything, you know? ive done well but more work is needer, of course. thank you. by the way, if anyone is interested in checking out a 12 step meeting for incest survivors - highly recommended - go here : http://www.siawso.org/index.html. if theres not one in your area, start one or try al-anon, as the principles translate well : http://www.al-anon.alateen.org/english.html

What you have been through is child abuse and i personaally feel an hour a week with a psychothrapist to discuss thru your feelings would help greatly you can be referred through your gp for this. Iwas sexually abused by my uncle and see a psychotherapist it helps a great deal as she specialises in child sexual abuse and gives me the one to one support i need to release my feelings of pain loss and anger.

Hi and good day to ya! Well this is about a large issue of trust betrayed and self confidence or lack of it.. I guess I have to ask do you prefer 12 steps as a means or are you looking to solve the problem. 12 stepper's preach co-dependence as a rule and the cognitive approach teaches self healing. This approach is way not liked by the AMA or shrinks in general due to a drastic reduction in future revenue. For some reason I ask my clients to start with 12 steps then present a cognitive approach and let them make the choice a life time as a recovering victim or a whole person that over came. I also notice that almost all shrinks who entered late into the field are them selves a victim and I guess I have to ask would you take some one into a filthy room to perform brain surgery or a clean room? Not all shrinks are the same and people are very dynamic and no one approach works for all. Most shrinks go right into treating chemicals with still other chemicals just trading one for another and call that a cure or a control and it is but it never lasts and almost always gets worse not better. (just as a example) I can suggest some approaches that go for total healing but be prepared to be blown away by some of the 12 steps you thought where effective. Please write as I wont put it here and you can call them or not but if you do I think you will be more whole for it and see more color. I am sorry for being blunt here but search your heart and more importent your brain this has effected every aspect of your life past and future and the results have not been what you have wished for yet and never will be till some basics are done first.

Thanks for the references. I guess anything can help. I used to live in Philadelphia and they had a program called NOVA. I'm not sure if it is still around but I never felt so great in my life after I went there for about six weeks, one time a week. There is also an online resource called Elizabeth Bueller? or something like that---- Sorry I can't think of it. I've been going to counseling for years and I brought a friend that I thought would benefit from the group therapy; but they would not let her participate because she had not been to counseling yet. I'm not sure of the reaction of the survivor who goes through group first; but I can tell you when I brought her home after the first meeting, she was clutching her stomach quite desperately. I don't understand why they don't just let them participate. Also the book "Conspiracy of Silence" is good. Now I heard from my therapist about a book called "Please Hear What I'm Not Saying" Has anyone heard of it?________ I agree, "The Courage To Heal" is a real brainteaser. I think my brain does mental gymnastics on that one.
