It's a school based on the teaching philosophies of Maria Montessori. The basic idea is that the children have more of a say in what they will learn, how they will learn it, and when they will learn it. My son went to a M. preschool, and did very well there.

Montessori schools differ from traditional schools in that children choose the areas that they want to discover, rather than traditional schools where the teacher selects the material.
There are guidelines for Montessori schools to follow, but there is a lot of room for interpretation, so each Montessori school can be quite different from another. I have taught in both, and personally, I prefer the traditional. I have followed students through their grades and have not found that either is better/worse, parents just have to select the method that works best for their child and their learning style.

Most Montessori schools are not true Montessori schools. There is no regulation. Here's a good history of Montessori to check out: http://www.smithsonianmagazine.com/issues/2002/september/montessori.php

It is a school where there are more hands-on activities to teach the lesson and kids are taught in a different way than public schools. Montesorri schools never go past 8th grade.
