There is no justification for attacking and destroying a nation. They say the people were given time to evacuate but where do they go too. Bridges ,roads and airports were being bombed. It is about much more than just the two soldiers.
some people are forgetting that Israel initiated this war.

The 2 soldiers were just the spark that set off the fire. Ever since, Israel pulled out of Lebanon in 2000, the hezbollah have been launching missles across the border. Israel just wants them to stop and the Christians in Lebanon make up only 40 percent of the population and live mostly north. The other 60 percent are Muslim and live in southern Lebanon and control the government. They are the ones who are supporting the hezbollah's actions. The Christians should have asked for help from the UN when the hezbollah started to populate their country. By not doing anything, they have allowed this situation to fester.

I think they missed the boat.

If they had said "We will kill 1000 Hezbolah or people protecting Hezbolah
for every Israeli citizen killed or captured", they might been able to drive
a wedge between Hezbolah and the surrounding citizenry. However,
by just declaring open warfare, there is no motivation for the citizenry
to betray Hezbolah - they are the only ones defending Lebanon.

Israel lost the moral high ground by giving a disproportionate response
and I don't think they have a very good chance of achieving their
objectives because they have not isolated Hezbolah from its surrounding
support.

I think that this is the wrong forum to discuss this issue. Most of the people here will create answers based on religious views rather than logic.

The fact is that Israel started the conflict by sending troops to illegally occupied territory from which they were taken. Israel then started to blow up Lebanon in retaliation for something that they started. It all sounds a bit contrived to me, and no, their response is not justified

Whoa, hold the phone just a second there chief ! The Lebanese let Hezbollah launch rocket attacks into northern Israel, Israel has the right to return fire ! Hezbollah uses civilians as human shields, the whole world knows this so your argument is weak, nice try though !

I haven't heard of bombing generators or water treatment plants, but I acknowledge the roads, airports, and media centers.

Since Hezbollah are being supplied by other countries who want to see Israel destroyed, it seems like the right thing to do. Since the media station is being used to advertise hatred of the Jews and recruitment for Hezbollah, this too seemed like the right thing to do. Since the Hezbollah fighters use positions like hospitals, daycare centers to hide their munitions or armed forces, its very difficult to avoid hitting innocent civilians but unlike Hezbollah, they are not targeting civilians. Also, since many of the Hezbollah fighters are not wearing uniforms, all they have to do is throw down their AK-47 or their rocket propelled grenade launcher and 'voila' their civilians!

And no, this is not all about two soldiers, this is about almost daily attacks for two years against civilians with U.N. personnel looking on. You may want to call them morally equivalent, but they are not. So my question to you is, why would you think two years worth of similar attacks should be ignored? Why should Israel allow an armed force to invade their territory, kill 8 soldiers and kidnap 2?

Terrorists are people who say to each other and to our leaders, we will sacrifice our youth until our objective is achieved. (Israel is destroyed in this case) They literally idolize death, their own as well as others. A rational leadership by comparison is trying to protect its borders from invasion, protect its citizens from harm, protect its commerce from destruction.

Bottom line...both sides are fools. Like kids who can never get along. Both sides are quite guilty of war crimes as well. The difference is that to some, Israels responses are a tad over the top compared to the events that lead to them.

read these to nice little items and stop thinking that one side is better than the other...

Not really - they're targeting civilian services just as much as they're targetting Hezbollah. I think that bombing the airport before foreigners could evacuate was terrible, as is taking down power and water supplies for the people who stayed. Although many Lebanese support Hezbollah, not all of them are actively involved and as civilians, they should never be targets.

Israel is dropping leaflets from airplanes warning civilians to get out of danger (go north). They are not targeting civilians. Lebandon started and wants to pursue it, so Israel is justified in protecting themselves. What about Lebanon bombing and killing civilians in Israel? Where do you get more than a 1000 civilians? Israel does not want to harm Lebanon civilians. Hezbollah purposely does so and thinks it's an honor.

When the Hezbollah decided to increase the range of their rockets, and hit populated Haifa, and threaten Tel Aviv, I believe total occupation of Lebanon is justified.

Those "poor Lebanese" are behaving like the Vichy French. Did anyone have pity on them?

My plan: in order to kill a colony of ants, you have to hit the queen's lair, and kill the queen.

Bomb Syria; bomb Iran!
