Hey well the length of wait depends on the importance of what you're waiting for. If you have an issue that is important, and the best resolution is to speak to the person or department you're on hold for then it probably would be a good idea to continue holding until they answer. Remember some companies have a high call volume at times, and calls are answered in the order they're recieved so if you hang up and call back you've just put yourself back at the end of the line again. If your problem does not require immediate attention then you could try calling back another day when perhaps the wait would be less. It's just up to you how long you want to wait. I once waited on hold for 2 hours trying to get my computer fixed. I think the dude went on lunch. It took overall 4 hours for him to come to the conclusion that what I said was wrong with my computer actually was wrong.

Be patient for 5 minutes. After 10 minutes, start to get mad. After 15 minutes start cursing (not out loud if you have kids). After 20 minutes, get ready to yell at the live person.... Then when you get a live personal and they give you a reasonable apology, take a deep breath and forget about the wait.... Life's too short to be short tempered.

That is one of the most annoying things to me, and I don't get mad....
When I am asked 'will you hold?' I will say, 'For 1 minute.'
I do not sit on the phone, or stand in a line. If it is an automated 'hold', and it tells me I'll have to wait for a certain amount of time: It better be important.
I always say the only person or reason I'll stand in line or be put on hold for is Jesus Christ, and it wouldn't be to make payment arrangements, or an autograph......................

I think I once stayed on hold for like two hours before a real person came on. However, I don't by any means ecourage you to follow my lead. In fact, I hope you don't. I'd say....mmm....15 minutes TOPS.

I get bored and hang up within 5 minutes, unless there's something good on TV, in which case I can go for an hour or two!

It depends on how much you need to speak to that person. If it is a personal call, I say "no" when they ask to put me on hold. I ask them to call me back when they're free.

If it's important - as long as it takes
If it's something you need to do as in phone bill or electric bill - an hour if any longer complain
If it's something you want to do as in buy something - 30 minutes
Anything else - 15 minutes tops
