Mostly to differentiate them from legally from other people, especially if they have a common name, like Julie Smith or Joshua White.

I have a common name (in a street of 20 houses, two of my neighbours had the exact same name).

When I graduated from university, somebody else graduated with the same name as me. It took a lot of time and paperwork for me to prove I was a different person. It would have been a lot easier if at least one of us had had at least one middle name.

To me that is the best reason to give someone a middle name.
