Cancers that affect your age group CAN CAN CAN present with a rapidly enlarging single tonsil. It's called Lymphoma. The only way to be sure it isn't is by taking the tonsil off and sending it for flow cytometry as a fresh specimen.
The most common reason for a rapidly enlarging tonsil at your age, however, is not cancer, it's infection. It doesn't have to be strep, it just has to be an abscess forming bacterium that has managed to take up residence near or in the tonsil. In that case, you may have acute tonsillitis or a peritonsillar abscess. Usually you would feel pretty sick and have a sore throat. You may even find it difficult to swallow.
With lymphoma, some patients are sick for weeks on end with general malaise, weight loss, tiredness, anemia, etc. These can be subtle symptoms or quite aggressive. Often times, patients think they have the flu.
You need follow-up in about a week or two with either your medicine doc or an ENT. If you have an infected tonsil, it will either get better by then, or you will get quite sick and require drainage.
On the other hand, if it is hyperplasia (non cancerous growth of the tonsil) or indeed a cancer, it will not have subsided and you will likely require a tonsillectomy.
Best of luck to you...I hope it's nothing, but I would not ignore it no matter what the uninformed masses on this site tell you.

If some part of you is swollen, it usually means it's infected. The swelling is your body fighting off the infection. While cancer does occur in the tonsils, an infection is far more likely. Since tonsils help protect the body from harmful bacteria and viruses, they can become infected themselves. Swollen tonsils are usually treated with antibiotics nowadays, with removal as secondary option if the infection doesn't go away or there are severe breathing problems.
I'm not sure how much you trust your doctor, but you might want to go back and ask if your tonsil is infected. They might give you antibiotics, or they might just treat it like you have a cold. If it doesn't go away or it gets worse, then it's time to pester your doctor a bit, or get another opinion.

i think, you should ask for second opinion, and yes cancer grows slowly,.. try gargling salt and water solution, *0smosis* it will drain out water on your tonsils. so bacteria(if there is any) present there will eventually die because of lack of water.. or just wait till the meds effect. okay? dont worry too much, i know cancer is very frightening but be calm. you dont smoke, right? so no worries.. maybe you sang alot these past few weeks that swollen your tonsil. hehe

Cancer is the least likely thing. It's probably swolen because it's fighting something off. Do research on swollen tonsils on the internet and you will find cancer, if at all, at the bottom of the list. Replace your unreasonable fears with facts.

Is this not tonsilitis? Does not sound like cancer. The others are right, cancer grows a lot slower than that. Probably just an infection. Gargle with warm salt water 4x a day.

Anything & I mean ANYTHING that can irritate your throat can cause your tonsil(s) to swell. The fact that your Dr put you on sudafed would lead you to think that your Dr thought it was allergy or sinus related. If after taking the sudafed as pescribed, your tonsil is still swollen you might want to try and ear, nose, throat dr. You didn't mention if you were running a fever. And hey, I am really glad to hear you don't smoke!!!

I wouldn't worry too much... figure at worst you will have to have you're tonsils removed, but if your really worried, get a second opinion... just make an appointment with a different Dr and see what they say.... why mess around and worry? Just do it, the yellow pages are your friends if your not sure who to call.

Know the asteroid wellhead tonsil stones them for many years and it's been title not eventually.
Best decision I've ever made! I was shocked by the way of getting out the stones out. It was so easy, but more importantly, painless. I really liked the little trick he had for preventing gag reflex. He have one happy customer here.
