The calendar doesn't end. The 12th Baktun of the Mayan Long Count ends. It's like our calendar going from 1999 to 2000. It didn't end, just rolled over.
Also on that date (12-21-2012) there is a grand astronomical alignment between the sun and the Milky way at dawn. This alignment only happens every 26,000 years and to the Maya signified a new world age. This could mean in a spiritual sense or in a literal sense. But in a spiritual sense, the old world ended years ago.

End of the Mayan Great Cycle: December 21st, 2012 A.D.
Scholars today are recognizing that Mayan mythology is intimately related to the celestial movements of stars, the Milky Way and certain constellations. The sources of Mayan mythology are found in the sky, and the timetable of Creation Day is pinpointed by the end date of the Mayan Great Cycle. My research into the nature of this date reveals that a rare celestial alignment culminates on it. Generally speaking, what occurs is an alignment between the galactic and solar planes. Specifically, the winter solstice sun will conjunct the Milky Way, which is the edge of our spinning galaxy as viewed from earth. Furthermore, the place where the sun meets the Milky Way is where the "dark-rift" in the Milky Way is - a black ridge along the Milky Way caused by interstellar dust clouds.

The Mayans were odd, to say the least. If you have ever heard the Pol Pol Vuh, you would know they were a funny bunch. Not like the Aztecs. They were terminal *****.
According to Mayan belief, it would be the end of another cycle, but not the end of the world. So, look forward to possible Mayan spiritual rebirth! Perhaps the hero twins will make a come back and kick some serious godly *** at the ball game.
EDIT: Orca Baby, you realize the Mayans are native-*******-Mexicans, right? The Mayan heartland is on the Yucatan penninsula, smack dab on the Eastern-most part of Mexico. I'll let go of that war on terrorism crack, but if the Mayans predicted a rebirth of the Hero Twins, I guarantee they would come up and trick the ever-loving-**** out of us.
EDIT #2: God damn! Did people just start making **** up about the Mayan civilization and print it to sell as a text book? The Mayans ate no more children and babies than any other culture has. Not even the Aztecs with their horrendous sacrifices actually ate any human flesh. If YOU would actually stop and do some research, all of the blood letting rituals were performed by kings, princes, and other clergy and royalty... on THEMSELVES! They subsisted on corn and beans, so that takes care of any protein-deficiency theories on cannibalism.
No civilization practiced cannibalism to any extent greater than was practiced in Europe. In fact, possibly less cannibalism than we practice now through feeding our cows dead people matter fished out of rivers in the Ganges. Hate to tell you, but that protein-enriched feed our cows are chowing down on and giving them bovine spongiform has a lot of people in it from the Hindu burial practice of being sent up the Ganges river. Poor farmers fish dead people out to sell as dead animal matter for extra money on the side. The dead people go to the protein manufacturers in England, primarily, so that is why they have such a high rate of mad cow disease.
No, we are totally eating more people than the Mayans ever did and likely the Aztecs, too. Sacrifice does not equal cannibalism.

there have been soooo many different dates that the world is supposed to end. the Jehovah's witnesses have listed about 5 or 6 and then there was some guy named miller who had a whole bunch of people convinced of it being in October n like the 1840s i think. they all gathered in field waiting and watching the sun go down, then they all had to deal with everyone making fun of them when it didn't happen. guess we will see in 2012 but for me I am going to get up everyday and make the most of my life and i don't really care what the Mayans did forever ago, maybe they just got sick of making the dang calender and that is why it really ends there who knows

Do we have any evidence that the Mayans have a history of making correct predictions about the future ?
Furthermore, there could be a variety of reasons why the Mayan calendar ends in 2012. Doesnt have to mean that the Mayans believed that the world would end at that time...
Cordially,
John

My thoughts are that Jesus will come in 2012 because all the signs are coming the bible said that there would be plenty of natural disasters and what do you know disasters hurricane katriena, nsunami, and many more, a child that is said to do magical things born in Jerusalam, and several years of war the U.S. is at war right now with Iraq, and finally there will be a war against Israel and that is happaning also. but what I worrie about is will I be able to save my friends and show them the light before this day? Maybe my prodictions are wrong but if you look at revolations you will see the simalaritys in what I am saying but I may be wrong and another thing is one of the Lords numbers is 12-12-12 so decide for your self this is my decision

In my opinion, their calendar ended long, long ago; thanks to all those FRIENDLY Spaniards! Muahahahaha, bow to the white gods!
...but, to be slightly more serious, they probably just couldn't imagine it going on any longer than that. I mean, can you really truly think about what the world will be like in 2506? I can't. So why not say that the world will end then? Or in forty years? Or two millenniums? Does it really matter? The world will end when we've screwed it up badly enough that the human race can no longer survive. Or, if we manage to fix up the damage we've done, and stop global warming, it will end when the sun explodes. It's inevitable. But you'll be dead long before then. Don't worry about it.

I think it means they weren't around long enough to make a human sacrifice out of your ancestors, so you got to be around to ask the question. :>
Really....why should their calendar matter, seeing as how they got wiped out down to the family pets by the invading Spanish hordes? Seriously.
But if you really must know....something special *does* happen on 12-12-12, ok?
**whispers** That is the year THEY will finally show up. You know, the people that always get mentioned when folks say "well THEY say," or "well THEY studied..." Them. The ones who have more than half a brain, in other words.
And they will all look like cute schoolgirls. **ducks and covers** With *heat vision*!

2010 - 2050 is very crucial period. it is not the end of the world, but a significant phase change. As for the mayans are considered more people are unconcerned about the calender and civilisation than those who are. there will be scientific and spiritual discoveries that will change the way of life.
