The bone surrounding your teeth has been destroyed in order to move your teeth. The bone that heals will never be as strong as before you had braces. please ware the retainer at night, if not all the time.

You're supposed to keep wearing it, but I didn't. I had braces back in middle school to straighten my teeth and only wore the retainer after for a few months (I probably should be wearing it now years later). But I just couldn't be bothered. My teeth aren't really crooked now either. I say do what you want, they're your teeth. And if your teeth do move, your retainer won't fit anymore, so if you're not going to wear it anymore you might as well throw it away. Just be prepared to face the consequences of what you decide (ie. if your teeth get really crooked later on you may need to get them fixed again). We all have to make our own choices.

NO, NOOOOOO!!!!! My son just got his braces off and his dentist said he would need to wear a retainer for a least 3 nights a week for the rest of his life, to prevent the teeth from shifting. I promise you that your teeth will shift and in 15 years your teeth will be crooked if you don't wear you retainer. Keep wearing the retainer as long as you want your teeth to be straight.

Wear the retainer. Otherwise the braces will have been for nothing. I know from personal experience. I am pretty sure my teeth reverted to their pre-braces positions because I didn't wear my retainer enough, and I feel stupid for wasting all that time with braces and all of my parents money by not wearing it, even 13 years later (I am 29).

Mine are still moving and i got my braces off 12 years ago. i feel disappointed because i wore my retainers for years. You need to wear that thing, even just at night. Your teeth will move, i promise you. Then you wasted all that time with braces for no reason.

Consider yourself chided by several who answered before me. They are right. But....... If you just can't stand the thing and your teeth have not moved, try the retainer in your mouth every now and then. If it goes in hard and feels tight, wear it for a few nights until it feels comfortable again before you stash it in a drawer again. Repeat as necessary.
My son didn't wear his retainer either and now - 15 years later - he is getting his teeth straightened again with Invisalign.

teeth can move very slowly. keep the retainer but only wear it at night if it bothers you. but trust me not wearing your retainer now can cost you another several years in braces and thousands of dollars later. i learned that the hard way

Keep it somewhere but don't wear it.. so if you ever go in for a check up you can act like you've been wearing it all the time
