No...not like you think.
At the end of the service contract you can enlisted into another branch of service. Depending on the amount and time of service you have at the time and specialties is how much rank you can keep or lose. There is no automatic lateral transfer of rank and it also depends on which branch of service you go to.
The lady is wrong...contracts can be extended legally and have been under a program called stop loss. It's done by executive order in times of conflict when the force can ill afford to lose anyone. Hope that helps.

Can not be done. Army is a fedral grovement and the Coast Guard is part of Dept of Transportion. Now if you are in the Army and want to go Air Force, we kill form a long distance, that is going on now. More so Air Force into Army. I have no idea about the Navy or Marines. But I have family in these two branches and I did service in the Air Force

Only if you contract is up.Unless your on stop loss or on an extension. After your time is up you can go to the Coast Guard from the Army.A good education level and the right job skill (MOS) helps a lot.
By the way, the Coast Guard is now under Homeland Security.

Yes. He can do that, but I think he has to wait until his service contract is up, and re enlist into another branch.
All of the branches recruiters will tell you that you can only enlist in their branch, so be sure to see all of the branches, to find an honest recruiter.
Also, he can talk to his command career counselor about it. Tell him to go to the administration office or personnel, if he is not sure.
OOPS lastly-
They cant add time to his contract without him approving it, but they have their ways. They might threaten to make his life miserable for the remainder of his term, if he doesnt sign, but chances are, hes getting some kind of bonus for it. (at least he should be asking for a bonus, if he doesnt want to remain enlisted) He should go u[p the chain of command, if he is being threatened or harassed into extending his contract. Just so you know- thats not allowed, it is against the UCMJ.
Big Tree, you are wrong, if you are saying it cant be done. The rest of your post is hard to understand. I am a veteran and I have veteran friends who have re enlisted into other branches. I also have called around myself, and it IS possible to join another branch.
Also, The Coast Guard is only Dept of Transportation during peace time. During war time, it is department of Defense. Also, the Army is a genuine military branch, so I really dont know what you are trying to convey here. All 5 branches are military, ad DOD in wartime, its just that the Coast Guard is DOT in peacetime.

If you are in the Army you can't go to the Air Force, doesn't matter if you fulfilled your army contract. Bottomline is Airforce doesn't take prior service from the Army, I dont' know if they take from other services, probably not. The Marines will only take prior service when they are hurting for new recruits, which is rare. The Army, being the biggest service, is always hurting for recruits and takes anything that comes its way.

You can talk to a CG recruiter while you're on terminal leave from the Army. The transition can be seamless like my hubbie's. His ETS was July 13, but the recruiter got the ball rolling for us quickly so my hubbie only lost 2 weeks of active duty time (basically that was how long he had to wait until the next class for CG boot for prior service).

Not until your enlistment is up. Then you just walk into the office of the service you want to join and sign another contract. Exchange effected. Simple, right?
