Historically, atheists have been persecuted more than any other group. It's not new to our society, it's an old habit religious leaders developed long ago called "eliminate the competition" and keep the sheep in line.

*ROFL* @ comment (below) about atheists becoming agnostic. It works just the opposite. Agnostic is the word spineless atheists use to describe themselves so they aren't subjected to persecution or ridicule.

Because the vast majority of people in the US are programmed from a very early age that believing in (the Christian) God is right and good, and disbelieving him (being Muslim, pagan, atheist--it's all the same to them) is bad and wrong. What with the threat of hell for unbelievers and the reward of heaven for the faithful, people grow up being too terrified to even *think* about questioning that, so if anybody *else* has the audacity to question it, there must be something evil and wrong about them.

The key word in your question is "society". A society has a code of ethics and some laws, however strongly or loosely defined. As such laws go back to the covenant between mankind and God. On those grounds psychologically atheism will always be considered "wrong".

There is at least one other consideration, atheism presupposess that proof has been discovered that God does not exist, where as in agnosticism, it is admited that there may not be such a proof. As far as I understand the existence of God is a proven fact (you will have to sift through my answers to questions for more on this).

Well, apparently by existing, you are virtually treading on the eyes of Christians everywhere (this is assuming you are an atheist). You will change their children and you, personally, are responsible for everything wrong in society because of your lack of religion. Oh, and God loves you. But you're going to hell.

Or at least that's the impression I get from a lot of people.

I've been wondering the same thing. It is peculiar to America, so most just put it down to Americans bieng a bunch of weirdos.

That is also partly the reason why Tehran is seen globally as less of a threat than Washington.

(Tehran is the capital of Iran, in case you didn't know, fellow yahoo users)

I find nothing wrong with it. People want to believe that there is a higher power in control of the universe, and that there is a grand plan for everyone and everything.
And they can't stand it when you point out the holes in their beliefs, when you bring logic into the discussion. When you show them the inconsistencies in their religions, the wholesale contradictions, they are forced to think.
And thinking, my friend, is the realm of the athiest.

Your errors lays in which you attempt to define atheism the same way you attempt to define faith. in the experience that your definition of religion is a collection of values and ideology that a man or woman makes use of to furnish which ability to his or her existence, then atheism is maximum particularly not a faith. Atheism isn't something better than the acknowledgment of one's loss of perception in any form of god or deity. it is it. era. There are are no assigned values, ideals, concepts or dogma to this acknowledgment. it is not something better than a fact related to a man or woman's perceptions. it could seem to you that atheism is a faith by ability of the movements of a few atheists, yet that doesn't make you astounding. by ability of it is totally definition, a faith could desire to have some set of center values, ideals and prescribed ethical code. Atheism has none of those. you are going to be an atheist and not possibly care if human beings are non secular. you are going to be an atheist and have self assurance that faith is inherently risky to society. you are going to be an atheist and be a liberal...or a conservative. you are going to be an atheist and be virtually the rest, have self assurance in in basic terms the different theory, fee or ethical you opt to. quickly...No, atheism isn't a faith.

Well... Most Agnostics where Atheist at some point, and eventually succumbed to their inability to deny the God ~might~ exist. So, even Agnostics think Atheists are fighting a losing battle.

Because atheists are outnumbered by the moral majority in our society, so group consensus decides what they believe is right or rong.....However you want to look at it.

And the moral majority is always right, they voted for George Bush, didn't they?

cough, cough

It's only "wrong" in the eyes of fundamentalist Christians and Jews because they want as many people adherent to their faiths and therefore pouring money into their churches and synagogues. live by the Golden Rule "Do Unto Others as You Would Have Them Do Unto You", and you're living your life right, even as an antitheist ... or non-follower of any deity.
