One cup is 8 fluid ounces. Unfortunately cool whip is not fluid. I suspect that you can get a tub of cool whip into 3 cups but this will only fill the cup and not be 8 fluid ounces per cup. I think this is what you mean.

Swirly is correct. It is confusing to some people that think 8 ounces of weight (solid)is the same as 8 ounces of liquid. The volume is different, just like the difference between the amount of space that a 5 pound bag of sugar takes up and the space taken up by 5 pounds of feathers.

8 oz. is one cup by volume. If it specifies by wieght, then I have no idea without scooping it into a measuring cup.
