Get her to a convent.
Not really, but give me two points anyway.

Lately ... I've been giving the kids a gift card... and when their parents go shopping they bring that card and when the kid screams N cries for something $$$ from the card is handy and it's the childs money/gift anyways... so there ya go. Plus if the parent's think the child needs something like clothing the parent can choose, and not be umm.. disgusted w/the choice of what you got.? ... cuz i know some are very picky. Or I bring the kids shopping and let them choose (first telling them a limit). But a barbie of some sort is usually what others get. I wanted to buy my baby bro' the V-Tech V-Smile learning video game, (it's not limited to boys either, there are many games), but that all depends on how much you wanna spend. Thats' a great educational gift, yet the child still gets to have lots of fun! :)

Buy a bucket, stuff it with water colors, crayons, markers, stamps, scissors, glue, glitter, stickers, etc. a pack of construction paper and poster board. If you have a place like the Dollar Tree or Everything's a Dollar they sell all this including ones with a popular themes such as the Disney Princess' and Winnie the Pooh.
You can give the gift a personal touch by decorating the bucket with her name and favorite themes.
Happy shopping!

My grandkids have every toy under the sun, I give them stock for their birthdays and Christmas. Of course they are too small to understand the value of such a gift, so I get them magazine subscriptions (age appropriate), in addition to things like special markers, new crayons or other crafty type items. I wrap everything individually so they have more to open, and then put all the gifts together in another box and wrap that box too.

Something that doesn't encourage her to endorse the traditional female roles. Barbie and princess stories (about the woman being rescued) are harmful to a little girl's psyche. A good educational toy would work. There are many that I've seen commercials for that I wish I had when I was that age (16 years ago).
I LOVED stuffed animals/plushies!

It really depends on what she's into. 5 $1 bills is always a great gift. Kids at this age are starting to understand money and she will think she is rich!

A pony! ;)
Seriously though, buy her something that she'll use and learn from, instead of some fad toy that'll end up collecting dust after awhile.
Some suggestions would be play-doh, crayons, coloring books...etc.
Stuff like that will bring out her creative side, which is very important at that age. Keep it simple.

All little girls love Bratz packs bag, stickers, DVD, or anything BRATZ.
What about a nice out fit.
What about a nice piece of jewlery with her name & age engraved in it.
Girly stuff.
If shes still into dolls, maybe a doll house, all little girls love doll houses & can never wait to get one.
Or take her to a amusment park & get a anousment made over the loud specker to wish her a Happy 5th Birthday.

Well it depends what your budget is and what her personality is. Girls at that age particularly enjoy Barbies and baby dolls that they can play with and dress up. If you want to get her something more expensive try an American Doll (I enjoyed them when I was younger. http://store.americangirl.com/shop/home.php And if you get her a doll like a barbie or and american doll then you have her Christmas Gift set too. Just get the doll some new clothes or a ken doll for the barbie.

my daughter loves receiving gift cards - it makes her feel grown up to pick her own gift and then pay for it - plus it saves you the stress, it may seem unimaginative but I honestly think they are the best thing , plus it may also enable her parents to buy her something practical too - wow guess I should have read Susan's answer first, obviuosly I agree with her- oh , about $25.00 is a good amount
