There are different forms of OCD and without having a clear knowledge of the variety of possible symptoms, I don't think it's something that's easily understood. I work with children who have behavioral and/or emotional problems (including OCD) and it is possible for someone without it to understand when they are well informed. The best way to help your friend understand what you're going through is to share with her. Tell her how you feel. Tell her some of the symptoms that occur with your OCD. You are not alone, but I can see how you would feel that way. With knowledge comes understanding. Keep those around you (both friends and family) informed and you will feel less alone. You may also want to look for a support group in your area - a place where you can talk to other people going through the same thing.

yes other people can understand. If individuals like me and others take the time to read on the disorder we can understand. I am studying to be a child psychologist and have been around children and adults that have ocd and I totally understand what you are talking about. A person does not know what goes on in your mind only if you tell them, we are not telepathic. Take the time to do some research on the internet about the disorder and you will see that you are not the only one that feels the way that you do.

I have OCD and have had it since I was 4 years old. I am mostly a counter and I touch things until it feels ok to walk away. I don't have any problems with washing my hands or cleaning too much. I unerstand how you feel 100%.

I have a small case of OCD but mine probably isn't as bad as your case. I usually wash my hand 9 times a day and take a shower 3 times a day. People usually think i'm weird.

Why don't you go to group therapy. You will find alot of people that understand your problems and are willing to help. Your friend is trying to understand and God bless her for that, but, she probably doesn't understand the magnitude of ocd. Group therapy should help you, and I'm sure you will help others...Good Luck....

No, one who does not have OCD can not understand. I know someone who has it, but I can't understand what compels her to do what she does. I WANT to understand, but it doesn't make sense to me.

You need to join a support group ASAP. They will help you to understand why people don't understand.

Someone who does not have it cannot know what it is like to be you in your shoes. Only you know what the disease is like for you. If they have an idea of what things are like for you that's nice but they really have no clue.

I'm sure she doesn't understand, but she was probably trying to be sympathetic, maybe you should think of other peoples feeling as well.
