it depends on which way you are looking at it..... above or below for ceiling fans and behind or in front of for standing fans most ceiling fans have a switch at the top to change the airflow according to the season. one way pushes the air down to circulate the air conditioned breeze in the warm months and the other pulls the air up to circulate the heated air in the cold months.

If you turn a fan around, it will be moving clockwise.
Also, any good ceiling fan is reversible.

My ceiling fans go either way. CW pushes air up. CCW pushes air down.

so that they don't unscrew the blade from the threaded metal that attaches the blade to the motor. Tear one apart and clean it, you will see what I mean.
