I started by doing a mural for free at a place that has high visibility and could use one. They offered free publicity and I got all of my jobs from there - the referals just spiraled. They also paid me to do 2 more in the building. I also do free murals for schools and non-profits. Besides giving back to the community, this also generates business.

Make sure the free ones are smaller and very well executed - this is advertisement for your skills.

As far as price, it depends on many things. How large and intricate is the mural? How good are you at painting? etc.

the best way is to advertise yourself somehow. Some towns have small magazines and papers that you could place an add in for free or cheap. There are always people looking for someone to do that sort of thing. Personally i hate doing murals and portraits for people. They seem to think that you don't need decent pay because it is something that you enjoy doing. Prices depend. Most people charge by the hour, or size of the mural. If you are a student, they may try to rip you off, assuming that you need the money because you are a starving artist(my persnal experience). However if you already have a degree in painting you can be paid really well.

I would find a small business that looks like it could use a mural on the side of its building. Talk to the owner. Do some sketches for him. If you're just starting out, don't charge too much. After you've done a few of these, you'll have a portfolio to show prospective clients.

I entered contests and won and then I called up mural artists across the country and asked what they charged. They were very nice and did it by the square foot. I named a price and asked they hire a sign painter as I was a water colorist and I wasn't going to get a sky hook. chuckle. Actually, I wound up with the price as if I did paint it and the sign painter. I lucked out.
My friend was upset as I tried to get him to enter but he didn't want to do the sky hook either. He was floored when I got them to hire the sign painter. tee hee
