It was originally used by Mexicans to tell US soldiers to leave the country. Green Go .Green from the uniform color. The idea that the term came from Mexicans hearing soldiers sing a song is kind of absurd. I was in the military quite awhile and never heard anybody sing . Except for WWII musicals I don't think it ever happened.

Gringo is a slur used by early Mexican (spanish) people that has stuck through the years. Were are also called hueta's (pronounced wet-ta) which means white women, or hueto's (pronounced wet-toe) which means white men. It is just slang!!!

During the war between Mexico and the United States in the early 1800's, the US soldiers often sung a song called "Green grows the Rushes." The Mexicans heard it so much, combined with the green US soldier uniforms, they started calling the hated US soldiers "green-gos" (dropping the r's) in reference to the song. The name stuck.

"I'll sing you one, oh!
Green grow the rushes, oh!
What is your one, oh?
One is one and all alone and ever more shall be so.

I'll sing you two, oh!
Green grow the rushes, oh!
What is your two, oh?.........."

It goes all the way up to twelve, and just like the 12 Days of Christmas, you have to sing all the verses in descending order with each new number.
