The greatest race I've seen was the 1998 Belmont showdown between Real Quiet and Victory Gallop. Neither horse will be remembered among the all time greats but it was an amazing race. Real Quiet was an upset winner of the Kentucky Derby and Preakness and the pundits were against a Triple Crown. Many hardcore racing fans didn't feel he 'deserved' a mention beside Secretariat, Citation, etc. But a lot of younger fans wanted to see a Triple Crown winner and were enamored of the little colt, nicknamed 'the fish'. At Belmont, Real Quiet broke alertly and stalked the early leaders, while Victory Gallop took up his usual position about a dozen lengths from the front. Rounding the far turn jockey Kent Desormeaux loosened the reins and Real Quiet took the lead. He opened up a four length lead around the turn, while Victory Gallop was threading his way through the field. The crowd at Belmont started to cheer - some for Real Quiet, some for Victory Gallop. Real Quiet's premature move left him leg-weary and down the stretch Victory Gallop came charging. With a hundred yards from the wire Real Quiet still had the lead by about a length but Victory Gallop had the momentum. Everyone was on their feet screeming. They hit the wire at almost the exact same time in a photo that was too close to call. Announcer Tom Durkin famously called "they say a picture is worth a thousand words - this photo's worth five million bucks!". The crowd that had been deafening instantly went silent. The atmosphere was electric, everyone on pins and needles and it seemed like ages before the stewards posted the unofficial results. Victory Gallop's flared nostril hit the wire first. The Victory Gallop fans whooped, and some of the Real Quiet fans cried. It wasn't a clash of the Titans but if you were at Belmont that day it is a race you won't ever forget.

Makybe Diva

The only mare and horse, for that matter, to win The Melbourne Cup 3 Times. She won it the last time carrying the top weight in the field. For all you people who aren't Aussie's The Melbourne Cup is the biggest race in Australia! She won it more times than Pharlap!

Spendabuck is the greatest I've actually seen in person. He won the Kentucky Derby, then passed the other triple-crown races to run in the Jersey Derby at Garden State. (His owner also owned Garden State).
