I prefer cats, because they are more independent and less needy than dogs are. Cats don't have to be let out to go to the bathroom, and deal much better with hanging out on their own.

A dog (though I own a cat that I do kinda like) because you can talk to them better and they understand you better. They are better companions than cats and appear to have feelings, whereas most cats I have met do not care about you or your feelings. (not to say there are not cats who do. I had a very nice cat once)

Dogs are more affectionate and if I were trapped in a smoke-filled room in a burning house and my dog and my cat both knew where I was, I would trust the dog to find help for me and the cat to save its favorite toy and lament the fact that it now smells like smoke.

I dislike cats because people think it's ok to let cats run around loose on other people's property and use it as a litter box or get in fights with other animals in the middle of the night. A dog will be locked up in the pound for doing the same thing. I think cats should be held to the same standard. (To anyone who thinks that's rediculous, I own a cat and it's not. I hold my cat to that standard and she is not allowed out of the house without a leash and collar, or in a confined location. She has learned that she can't go outside without it and accepts it very well.)

I prefer cats at this time in my life. Since we both work, we couldn't take a dog out for more than a 9 hour span. That wouldn't be fair to the dog. You have to take dogs out for walks and to go to the bathroom. Cats play inside and use a litter box.

I have a cat and dog. I am a cat person but don't get me wrong, I love them both! I prefer cats because they are lovable, playful, independent, and don't give a rats *** what others think. They have their own mind. Cats are also low maintenance. The vet bill is a lot lower and they clean themselves. I love the fact that I never have to worry about my cat when I am out. I worry about my dog having to hold it, when my cat goes freely in his litter box. Also, in my case my dog SHEDS like CRAZY!!!! My cat rarely ever sheds. Oh, and one more thing....my dog stinks and has bad breath, my cat smells like a baby! They are both equally cute so I guess that's what really matters :)

i have both a cat (Bella) and dog (Lily). Lily is 2 in November and Bella is only a few months old but i couldn't possibly choose one over the other! Bella's less then 1/4 of lily's size and yet she manages to boss Lily around. their my girls and both have completely different personalities and i couldn't be without either one of them!

I've read some of the answers people have given and just want to say that both cats and dogs are equally demanding. they both need lots of attention and care. So please make sure when you get a pet of any kind that you know exactly how to look after them and that your lifestyle is suited to them.

DOG! Cats are very selfish and don't care about anything execpt themselves. Once my friend went on a 2 week vacation and when she got home her cat barfed and pooped on her. I don't think thats very nice. Dogs are very loyal and would do anything for their owner. They are also fun to play with and are always at your side.

I prefer cats... I like their independence and they are easier to housebreak than dogs although I have 3 dogs and a ferret too.

Cats, they are beautiful elegant animals. You have to earn their love. Dogs are ok but they love you just for feeding them. There is not much of a challenge. And most are not elegant.

A cat. A dog would be lonely at my house all day. And dogs are too hyper and they scare me.
