The M249 is a good weapon, and I think it is a worthy replacement for the M60. The SAW has a 200 round magazine, which means less reloading, and I believe it is generally more accurate than the M60. The M60 will probably still be around for quite a while though, as it too is a very solid weapon.

The M249 has not replaced the M60. The M249 fires the same size ammo as an M16, .223 cal. It is a great weapon, fires fast and accurate. It is a machine gun, but not as powerful as the 60, and meant to be manned by a single soldier. It gives a squad a belt fed full auto weapon for use, even when the bigger machine guns aren't around. I was a M249 gunner for more than a year. I was also a M240B gunner, which is the weapon that is replacing the M60. It fires the same ammo that the M60 fired, which is 7.62 cal ammo. It is a little heavier than the M60, but fires faster and is deadly accurate. Like the M60 it is belt fed and crew served, usually with a gunner and an assistant gunner, who helps set in the tripod if needed, feed ammo, and change out barrels before they get too hot and warp. Great weapon to have on your side in a fire fight.

The M249 is squad Automatic weapon Hence (SAW). The SAW is a single person weapon system where as the M60 is a crew served weapon utilizing 3 personnel. The M60 is a platoon weapon. When the Saw was deployed, each Squad had 2. One for each fire team which greatly enhanced the squads fire power. There are 2 M60's in a platoon. They are under the Platoon leaders command and direction. When I left the military (10 years ago) they were replacing the 60 with M240G. A much better weapon system.

The M240 model - 7.62 (not M249 - 5.56 mm) replaced the M60!
The M240b (dismount) is the official replacement for the M60.
The M249 SAW is an additional squad weapon that fires 5.56 (both magazine or belt-fed ammunition)
The M240 parts is fewer that the M60, and the mechanics of the weapon make it more reliable (even though it's modeled after a french weapon). It fires open bolt, so there's a tendancy to have a runaway gun.

The M60 was not replaced by the SAW. The SAW was adopted for use to replace an automatic rifleman who only used to have an M16.
The M60 is still a viable weapon in the Infantry.

The M-60 is still around.Though it is mainly in fixed positions(guard towers) or vehicle mounted (humvees and blackhawks).
The ones used by the SEALS are the M-60E3.
The M-249 replaced in the mid 80's (would you believe) the M-16A1 with bipod!.That was the SAW since the M-16A1 had full auto capability.
The M-60 itself was replaced by the M-240B.

The SAW was more of a replacement for the BAR as a squad automatic weapon. One benefit is that it uses 5.56 nato ammo just like the m16 and other nato rifles.
