Carrier pigeon is fun. Sending a child with a note. How about morse code by flashlight across a lake? Attach a note to the dog's collar. Airplane message. Astral projection. Skywriting. Write the message on your body and flash your lover. Send it concealed in something in the mail.

On a more serious note, during WWII, people would send packages to loved ones in Germany with money and notes rolled and inserted in spools of thread, or inside liners of coats. The human mind is ingenious when it comes to needing to get a message across. How about the knitted code in "A Tale of Two Cities"?
