If you're going to use an over-the-counter method (something you don't need a prescription or a doctor for), Crest WhiteStrips ($35-$50) are probably the best to use. They won't work as well if your teeth are crooked or too crowded. That's one of their flaws. Some of the other systems just aren't good to use. Some use an acid to help whiten teeth (that's bad). Others use too strong a concentration of peroxides (that can be bad, too). A safe system like Crest's or one you might get at your local dentist (that's what I prefer, but it'll cost more) should be fine. A good system will whiten teeth without damaging the teeth. About 50% of people who use a whitener will have temporary sensitivity that goes away when they stop using it. That's ok as long as it's not just killing you. If it hurts or irritates your gums, you should stop and see a dentist if it persists. P.S. Don't overdo it. Glow-in-the-dark teeth look REALLY goofy!

There are several ways to whiten teeth. The least invasive is the over the counter whitening toothpastes. Be warned, however, they only remove surface stains, and dont really change the color of your teeth. The next level would be the crest white strips, if you choose to do it on your own, that is your best bet. The worst that will happen is that you will have minor sensitivity, but that will last only as long as you continue the treatment. The most costly, and most effective is the in office dental bleaching, you need to see your dentist for that. I would reccomend the bleach trays that you wear every day for a couple of weeks, if you have any sensitivity with them, your dentist can give you something to put in the tray to help with that. Now, for the most costly: the one hour "laser" whitening. I would only reccomend this if you cant tolerate thin plastic trays in your mouth every night for a couple of weeks. The one hour costs a lot of money, and results vary from person to person.

I had my teeth whitened with the Zoom system. I was happy with the results, but my teeth HURT afterward. They make three passes lasting 20 minutes each. She said that if it started to hurt, to let her know and they'd stop. I didn't want to be a wimp, so when I started getting these "zings" like biting foil, I tried to ignore it.
During the last pass, I was getting more than one zing at a time and it was starting to hurt, so I finally gave in. I figured as soon as the stuff was off it would stop. But noooo. Even after we were done it continued and even got worse. I was knocked out for the whole day because I couldn't concentrate and nothing helped the pain.
The moral of the story is that if you decide to do it, stop as soon as those sensations start. As it turned out, she told me no one has made it all the way through without stopping. NOW she tells me. Sheesh.
