I know what it is, but what I don't know is where they come from. I am very clean and my 7 year old son has it. Did he catch it from another person, or do these things live in dirt? It is driving me crazy.......he has been treated and I have washed all linen. How long will the itching last? What else should I do? Where did this come from?

Your son got scabies from coming into contact with an infected person. Treatment takes a few days, but the itchiness can last a week or so after treatment - you can give your son Benadryl according to the package directions to help control the itch. Prevention is the best bet - avoid other people with scabies. If you don't know who transmitted scabies to your son, this will probably be difficult. It has nothing to do with cleanliness - it is a tiny bug that burrows into the skin and reproduces. If he is in any type of group setting he probably got it there.

It is caused by a small insect or mite about the size of a pinhead. It burrows into the outer layer of skin and lays eggs. Scabies is not caused by being dirty.
This should be eliminated after one course of treatment of Permethrin creme, but the itching will gradually subside over a period of several weeks. Scabies is highly contagious, spread by skin-skin contact with a person who has the disease. Source of infection: clothing, bed linens and blankets.

Scabies come from others that have it. My daughter was very prone to skin problems and usually a Doctor will give you an ointment to use to get rid of them. Don't worry, they will go away, but you are doing the right thing by washing everything. The itching will stop when the treatment kills them. Good luck.

Do u have any pets that might need to be treated also. The itching goes on for a while after you are treated. these little things burrow under the skin and they have to all die. clean all the bedding and wash the pillows and spray the mattress.and take daily baths with lots of anti bacterial soap. give it time for the itching to stop after the treatment. stay busy to occupy your mind so you wont think about scratching. be patient and dont over medicate. it is killing them even when you itch.....TIME

They come from other people. They may come through direct contact or through toilet seats, clothers and other such things.
