I know what it is, but what I don't know is where they come from. I am very clean and my 7 year old son has it. Did he catch it from another person, or do these things live in dirt? It is driving me crazy.......he has been treated and I have washed all linen. How long will the itching last? What else should I do? Where did this come from?

Hi Tina, I'll try and answer your question exactly from the perspective you are looking for.... Scabies, the condition, is caused by a microscopic mite called Sarcoptes Scabiei. This microscopic mite is present all over the world, but is more prevalent in areas that are unclean, unsanitary, and present the best conditions for the mite to live. Mites can live off the human body, or the host, for a few days...after that they die. So, if mites are present in a dirty area, they will eventually disappear if there is no suitable host for them to feed off of. The mite, once on the host (human skin) quickly gets busy. The male mites simply roam over the surface of the skin, whereas the females (those darn females) will quickly burrow into the top layer of the skin and lay eggs. The larvae mature in 3 to 10 days, and in a very short time, you have an infestation. The initial burrowing can cause itching, but the intense itching associated with Scabies, is typically caused by the mites feces, which causes an intense allergic reaction. As you probably already know, Scabies is highly, highly contagious and can be easily transmitted just by touching an infected person's skin. Humans typically acquire scabies from having close contact with an infected animal, typically a dog. I hope that helped you to understand it a little bit better. -Jeeem-

If you have pets it is likely that your child picked them up there. Scabies can be transmitted from birds and small mammals to humans, as well as from human to human. Scabies mites do not live in dirt, they live directly beneath the uppermost layer of skin. The itching is caused when they begin to burrow in search of food. Blood. The best way to cure scabies is to get some form of prescription medication. Some are topical solutions, some are pills or drops that can be taken orally. All bedding and furniture material that your child has come into contact with needs to be treated as well, as you would in treating lice. The thing with scabies though, is they don't survive as long as lice or other critters but clothing should be put in a sealed plastic bag for about 2 or 3 weeks before washing in hot water. Following treatment, the itching should diminish in a few days, but standard treatments for crabs/lice may not get the scabies infestation, since they burrow and reproduce quickly, and scabies can lead to a blood infection. BUT if you appled a specific scabies (scabicide?) treatment itching should diminish within a few days of the first treatment

The particular mite that causes Scabies is: "The Itch mite, better known to biologist and doctors as:"Sarcoptes Scabiei." Your son could've come in contact either with an animal or another child. It's normally associated with Eczema because of the scratching causing the secondary bacterial infection.
Treatment of Scabies: Treatment involves painting the entire body with appropriate chemicals. THe lotions are available from your doctor or pharmacy. The directions should be followed for the most effective results.
Lotions are applied from the neck down to the toes. The length of time the lotion is on the body for depends on the lotion type. The lotion can be left on for 8 to 24 hours. The lotion can then be washed off in a shower or bath.
All bedding, towels and clothing should be washed in hot water two days before treatment. They should be dried in a hot drier. A second treatment with the Scabies lotion may be required about 7 to 10 days later if the first treatment is not successful.
Since this is a child then consult your pharmacy or doctor, a milder lotion will be needed for his treatment.
You're health care advisor may have already told you to treat other family members. Everyone should receive treatment at the same time to prevent reinfestation.
Successful Treatment of Scabies: Itching may continue for 2-3 weeks even though the mites have been gotten rid of. No new burrows or rashes should appear 24-48 hours after treatment.
Treatment Lotions for Scabies: Permethrin such as Rid and Nix, Lindrane, Benzyl benzoate emulsion and Malathion.
