It depends. Most crypto linguists aren't fluent in their target languages and cannot compete as translators in the civilian world (except possibly document translators). A few do reach a level of fluency...it's all on the individual. Next it depends on the language. There are plenty of defense contractor positions for linguists, though not for all languages. Then it also depends on individual experience. If you have experience with real analysis, report writing, counter-intelligence, etc, those all make a difference in hireability. The security clearance alone can make a huge difference as that's almost always in demand, even if the position is clerical, or equipment maintenance, or computers, or security etc. And location. The DC area naturally has more positions for people with security clarances and linguists and intel analysts, though some other parts of the country do as well. Too many variables to give a definitive answer...I've seen some crypto linguists become civilian contracters, some become proffessional translators, some become used car salesmen. It all depends.

I am a funeral director and if you look up funeralnet.com, they have tons of job listings. It is probably the biggest site for funeral home jobs. Also most state boards have a classified listing on their websites. Hope this is helpful and good luck!
