Is anyone here Czech?

Question

Czech was my first language, however I've always had problems pronouncing the ř in their alphabet. Does anyone have any tips? My tongue doesn't seem to be flexible enough..

As far as I can suggest,pronouncing "Z" with a hook on top which would sound like the first letter in word"jur",in french meaning day like in " bon jur" and no dought you know how to pronounce that.
So to practise You'd start with "R" but touching very front of the palate just above your teeth and bring and hold all Your teeth together as continuing with "R" and at the same time pronounce
the "Z" as that first letter of"jur".
To pronounce it short,just start with teeth together pronouncing both letters at the same time,hope this helps.

I am Czech.And feel stupid I don't know any tips how to pronounce r(sorry,there's hook missing I don't have Czech keyboard)!I learned it when I was a kid now it's natural to me I always laugh when my boyfriend tries to pronounce some Czech words...

I'm Celtic, but from Irish extraction; not your own Czech Republic. We're cousins, the two people; your people are Celts too. I wonder if your language has any Gaelic components in it? That would be interesting.

Try this:
- just a rolled r, an then little by little add it a j sound
- think about "Dvořak". In the west we say "Dvor-jak" (rolled r). If you repeat it a lot, you should end up not differrenciating the rolled r and the j sounds.
- do as my Czech friends told me: "don´t worry, just do as the Slovaks do and say a rolled r!"

No. But you must be doing quite well as Czech has a few tricky pronunciations, but I know about the 'r' you're talking about, a retroflex fricative, I think! Now, that's hard!

Hey! my gf is czech! she has always just told me to do a combination of the r sound and the z/s (with hacek) sound. hope you learn, i am not good at it either. haha.
