Personally, I make mine at home, except when I'm traveling. Still, I don't begrudge their prices.
Most of these places pretty much only sell coffees and pastries (and logo items). They furnish the place with an appropriate "ambiance," pay the rent, supply the equipment, keep everything clean, pay staff, insurance, taxes, advertising, etc. All of these have to be covered through their sales of coffee and pastries.
You have to be willing to pay for convenience. Well, if you want to continue to have the convenience. :)

Well most people DON'T make them at home, especially since some of those require an espresso machine. Also, some people just are under time constraints or want their coffee drink during the middle of the work day, so these places are just capitalizing on it.

because all the "sheeple" - I mean people are afraid to show up at work without a starbucks label on their coffee cup. I'm drinking Folger's coffee and it is BLACK. No cream or sugar. When you like coffee, as opposed to cream and sugar, that's how you drink it.

Plus they have a container for tips by the register. This sounds like a business opportunity. Better coffee ... better price.

because so many people are dumb enough to or willing to pay the outrageous prices. If everyone stopped they would lower the prices... It's all about supply and demand.

BECAUSE COMPANIES LIKE STARBUCKS MAKE IT COOL/HIP AND PEOPLE BELIEVE THAT THEY NEED THAT TO BE COOL/HIP AND THEY'LL PAY THROUGH THE NOSE FOR IT....INSTEAD OF SAVING THEIR MONEY FOR MORE USEFUL THINGS....LIKE RETIREMENT.
