Also, do you tip them twice when you drop off your car and when you pick it up, or only once? If it's only once, then which time? This tipping stuff drives me crazy.

By the way, I don't go to "swanky" places a lot, but there are some hotels that require it I've been too.

I am not lazy, I park my own car, and would rather do that, but for the times when you don't have that option...

It's a real pain, because tipping is so archaic, but there are times when you have to do it, and valet parking isn't always an option. If you're staying in some hotels, you HAVE to let their valet park your car, so they really have you over a barrel.
You don't tip twice. You don't tip when you give them your car, only when you get it back. And then it's just a couple of bucks at most, if you're in an ultra swanky place. All they're doing is driving your car for half a block, and how much is that worth?

valet can be summoned via the hotel phone. He or she is the person who comes to your room for your dry cleaning or shoes to shine. The person who parks your car at finer restaurants and hotels is also known as a valet.

Steps:
1. Keep small bills available for the purpose of tipping.

2. Remember that a stingy tip could affect the service you receive in the future.

3. Give the valet $2 to $3 upon taking or dropping off clothes or shoes.

4. Tip a parking valet $2 for retrieving your car.

5. Make a mention of your gratitude when handing over the tip.

You should only tip as appropriate to the service received. If you are staying at a hotel that requires valet parking then tip only when you check out and make it suitable to the service received. For restaurants, be cheap and park it yourself.

Tip them when they return your car to you. Anything from $2.00 to $5.00 depending on the swank factor. I understand WHY you prefer to park your own car and not deal with valets and tipping - but please consider your safety. If it's at night, and dark, and you have to walk a bit to retrieve your car, it's well worth the short wait and the tip to stay in front of the restaurant.
