I just bought a african grey that is 10 years old ,hereis the problem he hasn't been out of his cage for a very long time. how do I get him to trust me to hold him. he tries to bite when I try

I am glad you found this poor bird, You can start giving it food out of your hand, Did you look on the Avien website its loaded with info and has places to email professionals with questions, also try the MSN African Grey Groups where you get advise from reg Grey owners.

It may take many months for him to get used to you. Put his cage near where you spend a lot of time. Talk to him a lot. Just give him time to get to know you. It may take up to a year or more for him to become trained. Don't expect anything from him. Your goal should just be to provide a safe and happy life for him. Go to Yahoo groups and join the africangreyparrotclub...lots of experienced people will help you.

this is a time consuming thing my grey did the same thing it took a lot of love and patience on my part . you also have to learn their body language . feathers ruffled leave it alone . eyes squinted .he is saying , leave me alone.start by giving him a treat put some nuts in a bowl and have him take it out of the bowl. that way you are keeping your fingers out of harms way. you you have any more questions you can e-mail me at shadow79812002@yahoo.com

It's going to take a lot of time and patience. He has to learn to trust you. Just take baby steps with him and eventually he'll come around and you will have a loyal pet. Good luck

let it get accostumed to you. birds are a lot like people in the sense that if they aren't comfortable they'll let you know. eventually he'll get used to you

just keep with it... leave his cage open too, he'll get curious
