The best is what works for you and your kids. I have learned through experience (and lots of cash) that the "best" programs don't work for all kids. A lot of it has to do with learning styles (auditory, visual, kinesthetic). There are lots of great programs out there - you'll have to review them and see what works for you.

There are curriculum guides to help you. Look for Cathy Duffy's or Mary Pride's. Unless you are new to homeschooling (and VERY unsure of yourself as the teacher), don't use whole sets (like Bob Jones or A Beka). It's ok to pick and choose what you're going to study.

Try to keep both kids studying history and science together (and anything else you can teach jointly, even math and English). That way, you don't have to plan two separate lessons.

Creating your own curriculum. Use a school textbook for a guideline of what your kids should know, and then use primary sources. Your kids will get so much more education this way and they will know how to research things well before college. (you'd be depressed with the number of people who go to college without knowing how to use a book for reference.)

As long as you follow some guidelines for what they should know, why tie them down to a textbook? I have met very few textbooks that did not bore me to death, and finding my own information was always so facinating. I spent most of my homeschool life doing this and I loved it.

We just finished 7th grade using materials from Brigham Young University. I thought their lessons were very good. Well edited with very few typos or questionable points. You can do everything except the final exam online. I highly recommend BYU.

the best thing i have found to teach my kids is to ask them what they want to learn... then find things about it... have them look it up IN BOOKS then on-line... and go from there... read about the stuff too and make quizes about it. i found the best books for my family was a group of books called ( or close to it) "WHAT EVERY CHILD SHOULD KNOW BY "___ INSERT GRADE. it let me test them so that i new where they were in what subject. also check with your state guildlines thyat is a good place to start so that you know in a way where and they should be learning.

There are no best products except what will work for you and your kids which isn't necessarily what will work for me and my kids.

I do however always recommend Sonlight! www.sonlight.com
