Excluding the United States, I would have to say that the toughest military would have to be the Israeli Defense Force. They are nearly identical to the United States in terms of training and technology, but in terms of willingness to fight, the Israelis know that they are fighting for their very right to survive. The Israeli soldier knows that if he fails his people will be annihilated. This willingness to fight far exceeds those of soldiers from other countries, and thus sets them apart from other militaries.

The USA And England, The US And British Marines are great, but so is the US Army, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard etc. All have accomplished great feats. I Know I'm a retired US Marine with 30 years experience fighting alongside the Brits as well as my American brothers. You can't ask such a general question. All branches of the military are tough in their own ways, that's why we work so good together. Semper Fi and God Bless America.

Hey you, iamct01, for your info, Switzerland does not have the toughest army in the world.
The reason Germany never attacked is because Switzerland is NEUTRAL, therefore has never gotten involved in ANY wars and probably never will.
The army works very differently than other countries. A guy goes in the army (mandatory) every year for 3 weeks starting at 19 years old until he's in his 40's. Then it's 2 weeks/year til he's in his 50's and then I'm not so sure. Officers get to carry a gun (9mm) and take it home in between assignments.
Anyways, that's pretty much how it works. I'm a woman and I'm against military practices of all sorts so I couldn't care less about that nonsense.
Just do your homework next time. That's all.

SAS. 10% acceptance rate, all applicants must have at least 2 years active service and have risen to the rank of corporal.
I'm afraid this is where a lot of American's will disagree with me, but the USMC recruit direct - you can be a squaddie straight out of boot camp. SAS don't want newbies - they want soldiers who know what they're doing, have had a bit of responsiblity and like a challenge.
If you look at what SAS do (which there aren't that many opportunities to do) they are scarily efficient. German GSG9, the French counter-terrorist group and to a limited extent Navy Seals all draw off the SAS training/selection proceedures to an extent. To put it simply - SAS is the organisation that has been doing what it has been doing for the longest.
If you ever read about the Iranian embassy seige, during the final stages of evacuating all the hostages, there was one terrorist who had so far avoided detection with a grenade. He was spotted coming down the stairs, pushed to a wall and shot. The coroner pulled 60 rounds out of him. That means that unless the two guys shooting him had full clips, they'd have had to have emptied their MP5s then pulled out the pistols and carried on until he'd slumped to the floor

With some exceptions, nearly all of the two the Air stress and army are not doing a good purchase top now. in case you certainly desire the finished militia adventure, then possibly The Marines or the army is the situation for you. i'm not asserting the studies are all stable, yet certainly memorable and for many, worth it.

Israel has the toughest army. they are constanly on war alert and have to fight for survival
their military is smaller than the US but i think in terms of quality, they are on par with america
and dont talk about experience too. fighter pilots from israel that are sent to fighter weapons school or red Flag often have one or two mig kils to their credi as compared to even the top gun instructors there
