a goldsmith has nine gold coins, one of the coin is slightly heavier than the others he has a weighing pan which he can use only twice how can he find the heavier coin

he puts 3 on each side (6 on the scale 3 in his hand) if the scale evens out he knows he is holding the gold coin amongst the 3 he's holding. So he takes off the 6 and takes two from his hand and puts one on each side if the scale evens out again he knows he's holding the coin in his hand if one side is heavier that side contains the gold coin.

if the scale doesn't even out he just takes the three on the lightest side off and then takes the three on the heaviest side and puts one on each side, and again if the scale evens out then he's holding the coin, if it doesn't the heaviest side contains the heavier gold coin

put 3 coin on each side. if it balance then the heavier coin is on the other 3 else the it will show on the balance. from the 3 coin where the heavier coin is , put one on each side. if balance then the third coin will be the heavier coin else it will shown on the balance
