My mom says her cat(2 yr old male) has an unusual spot on his fur that looks like something sticky(almost like hairspray)got on it now it's stiff. He is very healthy, eats well, plays, makes lots of noise. She's just concerned cause she already cleaned it off him once, now it's back.Is there anything it could be or she should do for him?

Have her check the skin under the sticky area to make sure there is no cut or sign of a abcess that is leaking a small amount of pus causing this.

If he's not neutered yet it could be 'stud tail.' Male cats have hormone-sensitive oil glands in certain places that produce a thick fluid with a .... peculiar ... odor. It gets stuck in the fur around the glands and then attracts dirt. The main location is on the tail about 1 inch from the base, but they also have them on the back.

Neuter him, wait a couple weeks, then a good bath should take care of it.

Is the cat getting into anything that could be dripping on him? If he has found a favorite spot, say, under a leaky car, he could be getting grease on him. If it continues, she should take the cat to the vet to have the substance analysed to make sure he isn't sick.

YES Spend the money and take him to the vet. He could be getting into the same problem area and this could just be a form of oily dirt. But why take a chance!

Sounds like he getting into a car engine...peanut butter will break down the grease, and Mom should watch where he goes, so she can scare him from it...Lost a cat that way.

It would be best to take your cat to the Vet. to find out the nature of the problem to be sure it isn't anything more serious.
