I can't believe i have 13 more years until i can date. I am 13 years old right now. My mom thinks that dating is off-limits for people under 26. Even to my friends, that seems RIDICULOUS!!! Mom's philosophy is that i'll be 26 when i finish my doctors degree. She thinks that if i start getting into boys/men too early, my education will be messed up and i will start to divert my focus of life (bs!!!). I know i have enough self control to juggle my education and the boys. maybe not right now, but certainly when i'm 15 or 16. 17? Well what do you think? Do you think i should try to convince my mom to let me date earlier? Or do you think she is right about her no-dating-until-26 rule?

I think that she is overreacting and may lighten up as you get older. If she has not lightened up when it comes time to start university, I recommend that you seek residence and move out of the house. She would be stifling your creativity and I would even go so far to say that having that kind of control is abusive manipulation.
Don't get me wrong. I think that she is right in limiting who you can date until you're an adult and can make those kinds of decisions on your own. There is also merit in dating at a younger age. By the time that you are 26, you will have had the opportunity to date for 10-12 years by then and will have matured quite a bit because of it. If she doesn't allow you to date when you're younger, you will be a 26 year old with a 13 year old's dating experience trying to date 26-35 year olds with appropriate levels of experience.

Technically she can only keep you from dating until you are 18 and become a legal adult. I can understand her reasons and it is good advice to keep in mind even when you do turn 18. It sounds like she is mostly concerned for your well being though. Personally I'd think 16 is a good age to start dating, but it depends on the person. You could try talking to your mom about considering group dates at a certain age before then. In any case, let her know how you feel but remember the best way to try and change her mind is to show you are ready to date through your behavior and attitude of maturity rather than pushing and getting upset.
